Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005PE

ASUS Eee PC 1005PE-P (Seashell) Review

Powered by Intel’s new Atom N450 processor, this sleek and stylish netbook lasts well over 10 hours on a charge.

There’s good battery life, and then there’s leave-the-power-brick-at-home battery life. The ASUSEee PC 1005PE ($379) is one of the first netbooks to hit the market with Intel’s new Atom N450 processor and NM10 chipset, code named Pine Trail, which promises a 20 percent decrease in average power consumption. And ASUS makes the most of the chip; this 2.8-pound machine lasts over 10.5 hours on a charge. While very similar to the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA, a system we praised for its style, this sequel offers better endurance, a bigger 250GB hard drive, and a better keyboard. Plus, ASUS includes a nifty software bundle. We have some nitpicks about the design—and you shouldn’t expect a marked performance improvement—but overall this netbook is a very good choice.

Design

From the outside, the 1005PE looks the same as the 1005HA; both are members of ASUS’ Seashell family. Though less svelte than the inch-thick 1008HA, the 1005HA pulls from the same gene pool with its curved panels and sharp look. Gone, however, is the uniform body of the 1008HA; no plastic covers the edges or hides the ports. Its glossy dark blue lid (also available in black, pink, and white) is covered in a scratch-resistant Infusion finish. The look is sleek, but you’ll have to be willing to put up with fingerprint smudges.

The 1005PE is thicker than the ultraslim 1008HA. It measures 10.2 x 6.9 x 1.4 inches, compared to 10.3 x 7.0 x 1.0 inches. The 1005HA is also a bit thicker than the Toshiba mini NB205 (1.3 inches), but has the same thickness as the older Eee PC 1000HE. The 2.8-pound 1005PE didn’t put any strain on our shoulder, even with the charger (which brings the entire package up to 3.4 pounds).

Heat

Generally, the 1005PE kept its cool. After viewing a video at full screen on Hulu for 15 minutes, the temperature between the G and H keys reached 93 degrees Fahrenheit. The touchpad was a temperate 90 degrees, and the center of the underside got as hot as 95 degrees; the bottom near the exhaust vent reached a rather hot 102 degrees. (We consider temperatures above 95 degrees unpleasant, and above 100 degrees extremely unpleasant.)

Keyboard and Touchpad

For the 1005PE, ASUS opted for an island-style keyboard, similar to that on the Eee PC 1201N. While the keys may seem smaller than those on the 1005HA and 1008HA—both of which have a more traditional layout—we found the 1005PE easy and comfortable to type on. However, ASUS took a slight step back, as unlike every other netbook since the Eee PC 1000HE, the right Shift key is shrunken, and not directly below the Enter key. We give the Toshiba mini NB205’s keyboard a slight edge in terms of size and comfort.

The 2.5 x 1.5-inch pad touchpad, similar to that on the 1005HE, blends in with the system’s deck and is covered with small braille-like dots. Unlike some netbooks, the pad had very little friction, and navigating the desktop didn’t require much backtracking. As with other Eee PCs, the touchpad also supports multitouch gestures; using two fingers to pinch and zoom in on a Web page in Internet Explorer was easy, and the image quickly rendered in its new size.

ASUS equipped the 1005PE with a single mouse button. Unlike some netbooks we’ve used, this implementation was comfortable for making selections. However, we still prefer the Toshiba mini NB205’s larger touchpad and dedicated right and left buttons.

Display and Audio

The 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600-pixel LED-backlit display on the 1005PE allows Web pages and windows to fit to size on the screen. A streaming clip of Scrubs from Hulu looked smooth, and colors were bright. Horizontal viewing angles were good, but to get the best picture you need to tilt the screen back about 30 degrees. When the display is at a right angle the image washes out.

From afar, the 0.8-inch thick glossy black bezel (which was a little larger than we prefer) looked as if the screen was flush with the frame; up close, however, you could clearly make out the raised frame.

The speakers, located at the bottom front edge of the 1005PE, allowed us to hear songs loud and clear from across the room. Kings of Leon’s “Sex On Fire” came through powerfully with little to no distortion. Run-DMC’s “Christmas In Hollis” was on the tinny side, but the speakers sounded better than most netbooks.

Ports and Webcam

On the left side of the 1005PE is a USB and VGA port. On the right side are a 3-in-1 memory card reader, an Ethernet port, two USB ports, and headphone and microphone jacks.

Above the display, a 1.3-megapixel webcam provided clear images in a Skype video chat. A friend saw little motion blur when we waved quickly and made out details on our face.

Personal Computer solution

Computers, Personal

In 1976, the Cray-1 supercomputer was installed at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. It was then the fastest computer in the world, performing 160 million floating-point operations per second. The computer cost 8.8 million dollars and generated so much heat that it required its own refrigeration system.

By 2001, anyone could buy a computer that will fit on a desk, is 34 times as fast as the Cray-1, and has 32 times the memory. Moreover, it can compute, connect to other computers, play music CDs, and show DVD movies. This newer computer can also burn CDs and DVDs. All of this computing power could be purchased for less than $5,000. There has certainly been a revolution.

What began as a box of parts to be assembled and tediously programmed by electronics enthusiasts has become a tool easily used by office workers and schoolchildren. The rapid growth of computer software has enabled personal computers to play games and music, to be used as intelligent typewriters, to perform mathematical calculations, and, through online capabilities, to be used for email and to connect to the vast treasures of theInternet. Computers have become smaller, more powerful, faster, more user-friendly, and versatile enough to meet almost any need.

Rockus 3D 2.1 Computer Speakers

If you think like us, you dread seeing a 3D moniker emblazoned on any speaker system. If the material isn’t recorded that way, don’t monkey with it. Antec wisely gives you the choice of running the audio through its digital signal processor or just reproducing what the artist has wrought.

Specs Antec Rockus 3D Satellite Speakers 2.5-inch full-range paper cone Satellite Enclosures Aluminum Subwoofer 6.5-inch active driver; 9-inch passive radiator Subwoofer Enclosure 16mm MDF Amplifier Class Class C Stated Power Rating 25 watts to each satellite; 100 watts to the subwoofer Inputs 1/8-inch and RCA for analog stereo; TOSlink (digital) Outputs Binding clips for speakers

We dig the stands that angle the satellites up toward our ears, but we could do without the honeycomb grilles and the garish flared rings in Antec’s Rockus 3D Speaker System.

Given the number of aluminum cases Antec builds, it comes as no surprise that the company would choose the material for the cylindrical satellites in this 2.1-channel speaker system. Aluminum is an uncommon material in this price range, but it’s a good choice. Aluminum doesn’t flex, like MDF or even ABS plastic, so you hear more of the speaker and less of the enclosure. But it matters a great deal what type of drivers go into those enclosures, and Antec tries to get away with one-way, 2.5-inch paper-cone drivers (more on that when we discuss the system’s performance). The satellites don’t use hardwired cables, but you’ll need either RCA couplers or RCA plugs you can solder onto longer cables if the ones provided aren’t long enough (the other ends of the cable are tinned wire that connect to spring clips on the subwoofer).

The subwoofer consists of a 6.5-inch active driver aided by a 9-inch passive radiator housed in the more typical MDF cabinet. The active driver is mounted in the rear of the cabinet and the passive radiator is in front, so the unit performs best with its back 10 or 12 inches away from a wall. The sub houses the amp and power supply and has one set of stereo RCA inputs, a 1/8-inch aux input, and a TOSlink digital input. A hardwired puck controls the volume, switches between analog and digital inputs, and toggles the DSP’s 3D algorithm on and off. What it’s sorely missing is a headphone jack and an aux input you could plug a digital media player into.

We thought the absence of dedicated tweeters would flatten the high end, but it didn’t; the satellites sounded brittle and harsh, instead. When we pumped Van Halen’s “Everybody Wants Some” through the system and cranked the amp way up, the satellites sounded as though they were tearing themselves apart. Could this be related to Antec’s decision to use a Class C amp? Class C amps are extremely efficient, but they also produce a great deal of distortion and are more commonly found in megaphones and walkie-talkies, devices that aren’t expected to produce high-fidelity sound. We’re not saying the Rockus satellites sound like megaphones, but they are pretty darned harsh.

The subwoofer scored better. The computer-speaker market is filled with flabby subs, and Antec’s delivers a relatively tight, well-defined low-end; but it’s just not a good match for the satellites. We like bass we can feel in our gut, and this one can’t emerge from the shadow of those banshee satellites.

Saving and Improve Battery Life for Android

All right we at Android Advices always go with latest firmware updates, latest android mobile news and review of the Android mobile phones. We also covers individuals tips like on how to increase battery life on various devices like Motorola Defy, Samsung Replenish, HTC Aria and other mobile & tablets.

There are few tips by which you can improve the battery life of your mobile phone, almost certain things mentioned here can’t be avoided. Provided here is the general tips where you can save your mobile phone battery for quickly draining out -

  • Charging it Up

If you are using Android phone then you have to charge your mobile phone at least once a day and almost everyday. If are among those person who never puts his phone down then you have to charge your phone twice a day. So be ready with your charging cable or charger at your desired time. Unless you have an amazing phone with better backup like upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia Duo which has 2500 mAh battery (no details on battery backup life but I am sure it would offer at least 12 hours of battery life on continuous usage). Apart from that if you have mobile phone with 8 hours or 10 hours battery life specifications then after few months of usage of your phone the battery life would be reduced considerably due to physical aging of the components and life of chargeable batteries is not long enough.

One thing I should praise about Android phone is that it can be charged using your microUSB card slot connection to PC too. A better alternative is to have an extra battery along with you.

  • Screen Brightness

The screen brightness on your mobile phone uses most of the battery so it’s advised that you use auto brightness if possible. If you mobile phone doesn’t have the setting of auto brightness then pick something setting sensible for a default and work.

Importantly you should set screen timeout on your mobile phone. It’s the time amount in inactivity before your screen goes to dark (power saving) or auto lock. Keeping your mobile phone setting for longer timeout it’s just wasting the battery and on the other hand if you set it for 10 or 15 seconds, it would be not that much difficult for you to unlock your devices and be back to your work. Preferably, I would say keep it 20 seconds or 30 seconds.

For the LED screen on some of the Android devices, you will not find the option of auto brightness. It will have the settings from low, medium and high. The high setting will keep you screen for the maximum power usage, the medium is nice for indoor use and the low one works very well in the dark.

  • Desktop Background

You love those lovely live wallpapers but they consume battery continuously. The live wallpapers apart from consuming the battery continuously it also consume a part of your processor as the process runs continuously. Again this is not the battery problem and there is no reason to complain about the batter drains when you have the live wallpapers on your mobile phone.

An interesting fact is that on your LED screen, dark wallpapers consume less battery than their counterparts.

  • GPS & Wi Fi

When GPS is ON in your mobile phone, it consumes a hard amount of processor memory and battery would be eaten away like no man’s business. So it’s better advised to use GPS when you need it. The Foursquare app to consume a little battery while running, so keep it usage to the limit.

Also, Wi Fi is present in most of the Android mobile phone, infact you can live on Android mobile phone without 3G or Wi Fi connectivity. Turn off your Wi Fi whenever you don’t need them. These settings are available in Home > Menu > Settings and then go to Wireless and Networks.

  • Wireless Radio & 3G

You love 3G but most of the times when you are connected to 3G internet on your mobile phone, the battery meters quickly drain out. Again, it’s not the problem of your phone or the battery, the 3G and the 4G networks consumes more battery as the connectivity is faster.

So until and unless you are not using the 3G services, its better to switch to GSM mode network rather than going with the dual mode network or the WCDMA mode which drains the batter faster than GSM mode. The reason is when you are on dual mode, the phone would sending/receiving signals from both 2G and 3G, hence require power for both to operate.

The same goes with the Wi-Fi radio. The wireless radio is always seeking for the signals which require power all the time thus it will soon drain out your battery life. So avoid using wireless radio.

  • End or Kill Processes

There are few apps which would continuously run on your mobile phone. Now the twist here is, instead of running unnecessary apps, you can end or kill them if you are not using them continuously.

  • Disable Apps that Sync Constantly

There are few apps in your Android mobile phone which keep on updating and sync. The built in email application other GMail can eat up your battery badly because it syncs with your email too regularly. If you have sync settings available then you can set sync after every hour or so because you might be receiving mails not all the time and continuously. The email application settings are available in Account Settings > Email check frequently.

The same things goes for the Twitter and Facebook accounts. The tweets are always available every minute just like the Facebook friends updates, wall post and pictures, which when on would drain your battery quickly. Set them to be updated at a particular interval.
